November 2024 News for Division 11
Themes
November will be another busy month. We will be talking about Remembrance Day, poppies (les coquelicots) and will attend a Remembrance Day assembly on Friday, November 8th. Over the following weeks, we will be discussing "La Nuit" or night. We will be learning about nocturnal animals, specifically owls. We will also be learning about objects in the night sky, and on Friday, November 29th, we will go on a field trip to the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, otherwise known as The Centre of the Universe. (Permission form to follow.) We will do a variety of literacy activities and will produce a variety of art and craft projects based on the above mentioned themes.
In Math, Kindies are continuing to work on counting using one-to-one correspondence, recognizing and creating sets of numbers to ten, and making patterns. Grade ones are continuing to work on recognizing numbers to 20, counting by 2 and 5s, and are working on basic addition. We will continue to do daily literacy activities, as well as weekly literacy centers. Kindergarten children are working on identify letters and their sounds in French, matching upper and lower case letters, and recognizing their own names and their peer's names. Grade one children are continuing to review letter names and sounds, are learning more complex sounds and are working on a variety of phonological awareness skills including identifying initial and final sounds, and segmenting words into individual sounds, and blending sounds to make words. We are working on printing using proper letter formation. Grade ones are specifically looking at printing on interlined paper with correct sizing of letters. I follow the printing program put out by our Occupational Therapists. (This program groups letters together based on similar formation, rather than starting at A and working our way to Z.) The first set of letters we are working on printing correctly is called the "Crazy C Family". It includes all the letters that are formed from the letter C: c, o, a, d, g, and q. I encourage you to practice these with your child!
50th Day of School
On Wednesday, November 20th, we will have been at school for 50 days! We will be counting (a lot!) to 50 by ones, fives and tens. Please send in a collection of 50 small items for your child to count. (ex. Cheerios, dried beans/macaroni, rainbow loom elastics, flat stones, etc.) The children will be placing the items on a grid with 50 squares. It is helpful (and easier for your child to count!) if the items you send in can sit flat on the paper, and not roll. We will also tie in our Social Studies concept of looking at how things have changed over time by comparing things (such as cars, clothes, technology, etc.) from the 1950s to now.
Show and Tell
This month, we are beginning daily show and tell. We will have two themes for this month: "Fall / l'automne" and "All about me". Each child has been assigned one day a week on which they can bring one item to share. (In other words, your child will have Show and Tell 4 times each month.) Please see the Show and Tell section on the class website to find your child's day and more information about this month's theme. Please have them bring the item in an opaque bag, so that we can use our French oral language skills to ask questions in French in order to guess what the item is.
If you have not yet sent in a family photo, please do as soon as possible! Merci!
