May News
Two months to go! May is a busy month, with a lot happening at school and home. The children have now spent 8 months together, and now is the time of the year where some social issues usually arise. (They are kind of like siblings that have spent too much time together- some of them start to get on each other's nerves!!) I know that it's difficult with the sun setting later and with evening baseball practices, but getting a good night sleep will hopefully help the children cope and to be more tolerant with each other.
Themes
During the month of May, we will be learning about plants and things that grow. We are learning about some local native plants, and their traditional uses by the WSANEC people. We will also learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and chickens. We received Painted Lady butterfly larvae, and watched them transform into butterflies. As you know, we now have chicken eggs in our class and are looking forward to watching the chicks grow and hatch in a few weeks.
As part of our language arts curriculum, we will be reading a variety of fairy tales in French this month. The children continue to work on using their "best guess writing" (using invented spelling to write the sounds they hear) to write in their journals. Kindergarten students are expected to write one sentence, and grade ones are expected to write 2-3 sentences or more. Grade one families, please continue to practice reading daily with your child in French. Our goal is to illustrate and add 2 new French stories per week into their dark blue home reading notebooks.
In math, we will be completing our unit on measurement. Both Kindergarteners and Grade ones continue to work on learning addition and subtraction facts to 10 by heart. We have also started adding and subtracting to 20, but children aren't expected to be know these facts by heart.
Dramatic Play Centre
Our dramatic play centre has been transformed into a restaurant this month.
Show and Tell
For the month of May, the show and tell theme is "things that rhyme". Choose 2 things that rhyme- the words can be in English! (ex. a sock and a rock, a box and a fox, a house and a mouse, a potato and a tomato, etc.) The child will show us one of the things. We will identify it, and see if we can guess what the second object is.
