April News

Welcome to the last semester of school! As the weather these days is unpredictable, please ensure that your child has a water bottle that can be refilled for the warmer days, and a raincoat and change of clothes for the rainy days.

April Themes: For the month of April, we will continue to learn/review the names of animals in French. We will be reading stories as well as making up our own stories about animals. Kindergarten children are being encouraged to use their best guess spelling to print a single sentence in their journals writing the sounds they hear. Grade ones are encouraged to write multiple sentences, as well as more complex sentences. We are continuing to work on decoding (sounding out) when reading. A new booklet will be coming home each week to add to your home reading collection of tiny books. Throughout the month, we will do a variety of Spring art activities, as well as learn about the characteristics of Spring. Mrs. Cartwright, one of the Educational Assistants in the school, has brought in an incubator and chicken eggs for the Keating students to observe. They are being housed in the classroom across the hall from us, so we will be visiting them throughout the month until they hatch. We will also be going on 2 animal related field trips this month! We will be visiting Peninsula Veterinary Hospital on April 14th, and will be going to Beaver Lake on April 25 to participate in the CRDs Marvelous Mammals school program. In Math we will be continuing with number concepts such as counting backwards, counting on, and working on "doubles" (2+2=4, 3+3=6, etc.), as well as addition and subtraction facts. (Kindergarten students are working with numbers to 10, and grade ones with numbers to 20.) We will also begin a unit on measurement.

Easter Crafternoon: On April 17th, we will be doing Easter Crafts from 1:40 until the end of the day. If you would like to volunteer to help with these crafts, please let me know.

Take Home Books: We will be starting take home shape books this month to review shapes. Explanations will accompany the books, but the general idea is that your child complete one page of the book and return it back to school to be shared and sent to another family. The children are usually quite keen to have a turn!

Primary Play Mixers: We started Primary Play mixers today, and will continue to do this every Friday afternoon until the end of the year. The grade one children in the class joined Mme Barber and Mme Degroote/Mme Turner's Grade One Immersion classes for afternoon playtime. The Kindergarten children were divided into groups and played with Mme Houle and Mme Marita's Kindergarten students. This allows the children to make connections with their peers in other classes, as well as getting them used to being in a different classroom with different teachers.

Show and Tell themes:  The theme for April is Spring or nature. :) Your child can bring in something that reminds them of Spring or something that they have found in nature. (ex. a rock, a shell, a flower, etc.) They might also choose to make a picture collage of things they have found in nature.
