June News
It's hard to believe we are in our last month of school! Please continue to play games with your child that practice addition, subtraction and number recognition. Most children understand these concepts now, but would still benefit from frequent practice to solidify this knowledge and understanding. Having your Gr. 1 child read to you at home (even if it's just for 5-10 minutes a night) is so helpful for their reading development. As this improves, so will their self-esteem and confidence! Some of our Kindergarten students are beginning to read as well. If your child isn't, that's okay! Continue to read to them, and encourage them to point out letters/sounds they know.
Themes
This month, we will be learning beach and ocean vocabulary, as well as discussing the different types of communities (urban, suburban and rural).
Throughout the month, Kindergarten students will continue to review letter sounds and work on improving our best guess writing. I have been circulating during their writing time and helping them segment words into sounds to help facilitate hearing/writing more sounds in each word. I am encouraging the children to become more independent and to write the sounds they hear without constant adult support. Grade One students are continuing to work on their best guess writing, but are also being encouraged to use conventional spelling of commonly used words such as elle, avec, j'ai, j'aime, mange, est, et, etc.. We are also working on writing stories with a beginning, middle and end.
In math, both K and 1 students are continuing to work on addition and subtraction. Kindergarten children are working on adding/subtracting numbers to 10, and grade ones are working on adding/subtracting numbers to 20.
